How Is Indian Government Using Twitter Effectively

Social media, especially Twitter, has become the pre­eminent vehicle of information dissemination of the government. Our honourable Prime Minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, one of the most tech savvy politician, has been the first one to make the public and government aware about the use of social media to share information over social platforms like Twitter.

The whole concept of governance has dramatically changed the scenario. Accepting this changing trend, the government has become active with regard to the issues and changes in government policies and services on social media. This change has made the citizens more inquisitive about the happenings on social media and has played a huge positive role in educating them about the changes.

Previously, the aspect of sharing information was done by the print and press media, but ever since social media gained popularity and easy access, it galvanized the government and its various departments to support and follow it, which was a huge constructive step taken by the government.

Coming down to the effective uses of Twitter, there have been many incidents where Twitter played a vital role in the upbringing and betterment of the citizens of India.

In 2013, the ‘Aam Aadmi Party’ came into existence and went completely viral not only on twitter but over various social media platforms with their election campaigns, and startlingly formed the government!

In 2015, Indians who were helpless during the Yemen Crisis reached out to Sushma Swaraj directly on Twitter, and she pulled off a massive coordinated effort to rescue 5,600 people, out of which 4,640 were Indians and 960 nationals from 41 countries.

Later that year in 2015, The Mumbai police became one of the most popular accounts on twitter. Within a month’s time, their twitter handle became an emerging smart one liner force to spread awareness about drug abuse among youngsters in a witty manner.
